ANAPHYLAXIS

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

In May 2005, the Ontario government passed a new law, Bill 3:  An Act to protect anaphylactic pupils, which will affect all publicly funded schools in Ontario.  Named "Sabrina's Law" in honour of an Ontario student who died following an anaphylactic reaction in 2003, the law became effective January 1, 2006.  This law requires that every school board establish and maintain an anaphylaxis policy.  It also requires that principals develop individual plans for pupils at risk of anaphylaxis.  (Download a copy of the Bill at the Ontario Legislative Assembly website:http://www.ontla.on.ca/documents/Bills/38_Parliament/Session1/b003rep_e.htm.)

Streetsville Secondary School staff and parents are responsible for creating safe and healthy environments for all students within the limits of legislation, school configuration, number of anaphylactic students and available staff.  While it is impossible to create a risk-free environment, school staff and parents can take important steps to minimize potentially fatal allergic reactions.  It is unrealistic to "ban or eliminate" allergens (e.g. peanuts, nuts, nut oils, fish, milk, eggs, wheat).  Schools cannot ensure a "peanut-free" environment and therefore it is recommended that the words "ban" and "peanut-free" not be used in any communication.  The promise of a risk-free environment has the potential to create a false sense of security.

Streetsville Secondary School staff  will attend an anaphylactic awareness and education session and be trained to administer an EpiPen.

If your son/daughter is prone to an anaphylactic reaction.
